Psoriasis & Eczema
Eczema and psoriasis are both skin conditions that can cause a lot of physical and psychological distress for sufferers.
Up to 10% of adults have eczema in the UK and around 2% have psoriasis.
Eczema develops when the skin’s protective barrier is broken down and its ability to protect against irritants is compromised. This can cause skin to be red, dry, itchy and scaly. If the itching leads to scratching, the affected areas can bleed, scab and weep. Eczema commonly affects the elbows and knees but it can also develop on the face, neck and wrists.
Psoriasis is also an inflammatory condition which results in red, flaky, scaly and sometimes crusty skin. It often affects the scalp, elbows and knees but can potentially develop anywhere. Psoriasis develops when an overproduction of skin cells, which are renewed a much faster rate than normal.
Both eczema and psoriasis can have genetic causes. A family history of allergies can make you more likely to have eczema, for example.
With both conditions, the symptoms can have an impact on day-to-day life and the itching can be enough to affect your sleep.
Hypnotherapy can be successful for eczema and psoriasis as inflammatory responses in the body are controlled by the subconscious mind. Hypnosis allows direct access to the subconscious mind and can have a positive effect on symptoms.
