What Exactly is Self Care and Why Is It So Important?

When was the last time you really took some time for yourself and indulged in something that helped you to stay on track emotionally?

If you’re anything like most people, a busy life means that self care slips to the bottom of your priority list and you neglect to take care of yourself.

The end result can be emotional burnout, which can sometimes lead to physical problems too as a knock on effect.

Self care needs to be built into your life and practiced on a regular basis to help you to function at your best, both mentally and physically.

When you’re not on top of your game, you’re a lot more likely to be affected by stress and your resilience is more fragile.

So, what is self care? It’s often thought of as pampering but self care is about more than the occasional bubble bath or indulgent glass of wine when you fancy a bit of “me” time.

How to Beat Insomnia

Most of us have a bad night’s sleep every now and again but if you suffer from insomnia, this is the norm rather than a one off.

Sleep is really important for helping your body to restore energy levels, repair itself and regulate metabolism. If you’re struggling to get a good sleep most nights, it can have a really detrimental effect on you day-to-day life and affect your ability to concentrate and perform well.

A lot of people with insomnia start to believe that they will never get a proper night’s life again and this can make you scared to go to bed at night for fear that you won’t get to sleep. This creates anxiety that makes it even harder to sleep so it’s all too easy to get caught up in a vicious cycle with your sleeping patterns.

Many of my clients have found themselves stuck in this cycle and have successfully overcome it so I wanted to write this post to give you hope that you can break out of it too!

How to Feel Happier

Feeling happy is linked to longer longevity, stronger immunity and better health as we get older but how exactly do we achieve this degree of happiness?

What makes us happy varies from one person to another but it’s something that a lot of us feel is lacking in our lives. Lots of things can give us short term bursts of happiness but it’s long term happiness that can be much more evasive.

We often place a strong emphasis on the people around us and the material things that we have in the belief that this will make us happy but this can mean that the amount of happiness we feel is based on things we can’t control.

If you can start to see happiness and wellbeing as the result of your mind and body working together in tandem, you can begin to see it as something that you can improve by looking within yourself and not relying on outside factors.

What Is High Functioning Anxiety?

Anxiety is one of the issues that I see a lot with clients, even more so with the Oil & Gas downturn that has had so many negative effects on the Aberdeen area and causes a lot of stress.

In particular, there is one type of anxiety that is becoming more common but isn’t always recognised as an anxiety disorder even by people who suffer from it. In this first post for my blog, I wanted to draw attention to high functioning anxiety and the impact it can have.

How High Functioning Anxiety Works

“High functioning” anxiety means that you have anxiety but it doesn’t interfere with your ability to work and interact with other people. In this respect, you’re able to function reasonably well in everyday life and this can be both a good thing and a bad thing.
